9-step guide how to make a suppression list in Salesforce Marketing cloud

Updated: Sep 14, 2023

As a marketer, it's important to ensure that your email or SMS messages are reaching the right audience. Facing yourself in a situation where there is a large volume of people in SFMC are adressable, but you are not sure if you want these people included in your automated campaigns and journeys?

A suppression list is a list of email addresses or mobile numbers that you do not want to receive your email or SMS messages.

One way to do this is by creating a suppression list, which is a list of email addresses or mobile numbers that you do not want to receive your messages.

In Salesforce Marketing Cloud, you can create and automate a suppression list to ensure that your messages are only sent to the intended recipients.

Follow these 9 pragmatic steps in SFMC.Essential to create a suppression list:

  • Navigate to the Email Studio or MobileConnect module in Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

  • Click on the "Subscribers" tab and select "Lists" from the dropdown menu.

  • Click the "Create" button and select "Data Extension" from the dropdown menu.

  • Give your data extension a name and select the appropriate folder in which to store it.

  • In the data extension, create two columns: one for email addresses or mobile numbers and another for a reason for suppression (optional).

  • Import the list of email addresses or mobile numbers that you want to suppress into the data extension. You can do this by using a CSV file or manually entering the information.

  • Once your data extension is populated, navigate to the "Emails" or "SMS" tab in Email Studio or MobileConnect.

  • Select the email or SMS message that you want to suppress certain email addresses or mobile numbers from.

  • Under the "Audience" tab, select "Exclusion Script" and enter a script that will exclude the email addresses or mobile numbers in your suppression list. For example, for an email message, you could enter the following script:

ROWCOUNT(LOOKUPROWS("Suppression_List","EmailAddress",EmailAddress))>0

This script will exclude any email addresses that are in your suppression list.

  • Save your email or SMS message and send it as you normally would.

By following these steps, you can create and use a suppression list to ensure that your email or SMS messages are only sent to the intended recipients.
